History

Early Years

Formation of Group and Release of First Album

The group originally consisted of Cha Yu Mi, Jung Shi Woon, Jang Hyun Jung, Lee Hee Jin and Kim E-Z. They used an edgy style similar to that of the Spice Girls. However, in the strict and conservative Korean culture, their edgey style didn't result in success. Also, there were endless of rumors about the conflicts between younger group members (E-Z Kim and Hee Jin Lee) and the older members (Cha Yu Mi, Jung Shi Woon, Jang Hyun Jung). When Cha was injured on stage during performance, she was immediately replaced by Kan Mi Youn. After the first album, Jung and Jang were removed from the group due to conflicts.

Revival in the Second Album

After the replacement of three members with Shim Eun Jin, Kan Mi Youn, and Lee Gai, Baby VOX went on a strict training regimen to develop their dancing and singing, which included mental and physical training as well. Baby VOX adopted the cuter and shy style used by S.E.S. and Fin.K.L. Their first single, Ya Ya Ya became a quick success after the release. Ya Ya Ya hit number seven on the Korean pop charts, which was their best-ever ranking. With their second single, Change the group adopted a more mature and sexy look. However, it was later revealed that Lee Gai lied to the management company about her age and was removed from the group.

Success of the Third Album

Yoon Eun Hye replaced Lee Gai in the lineup and the group's first single from the album Get Up was soon popular nationwide. For the first time, they reached the number one spot on the Korean music pop charts. Another single 'Killer' also hit the first place on the music charts, with the sexy lady warrior style. With the Killer single, Baby VOX beat H.O.T. in the pop charts and earned the 'Top Excellency Award' in Seoul Music Award in 1999. The ballad single, 'Missing You' was very popular and is considered the group's best ballad single ever.

Fourth and Fifth Album, Foreign Promotions

From 2000-2001, Baby VOX made more appearnces in variety shows. After their success of the third album, they started promoting themsevles in China and gained a great popularity and strong fanbase. Their popularity spread to Japan and other Southeast Asian countries. [17] The fourth album, 'Why', continued its popularity, with the two strong singles Why and Betrayal. Also, Baby VOX appeared as a show host in SBS variety program, Beautiful Sunday-Cruise to the Korea Strait. With their fifth album, Boyish Story in 2001, even though the album sales and its singles Game Over, Doll, I Wish You are My Love were not as popular as the third and fourth album, the group's popularity didn't fade. Baby VOX also made their appearance as a show host in KBS variety program, Your Saturday-Aqua Girls.

Special Album

As well as their success in Asian markets, Baby VOX released a special hits album were from their first five albums, with two single hits Coincidence and Go. With Coincidence, the group hit number one in the Korean music charts for the first time in three years. Coincidence was also released in a World Cup version, and performed all around Korea during the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup season, and remained popular throughout the summer. In addition to that, they managed to have a Live Concert in Seoul, which was hugely popular. A Baby VOX Music Award was also created in China.

Sixth Album

In spring of 2003, Baby V.O.X. released their sixth album, a feat achieved by very few Korean pop groups. They even released a photo album that was purported to have semi-nude images of the girls (with Eun Hye unable to participate due to her age), causing some controversy, but it faded as the image content was found to be hyped up by the media. Baby VOX topped the Chinese music chart with the Chinese single I'm Still Loving You, 3rd place with 나 어떡해 (What Should I Do) and 4th place with the same single in Thailand as well. However, this was also when the group's fortunes started to change. While 'What Should I Do' hit the number one spot in the Korean music chart, their second single, 바램 (The Wish) wasn't as popular. In addition, their performances appeared to be lackluster, especially with the latter single, as it was not promoted for a long time period. This may be attributed to the fact that members did not like this album's concept.

Seventh Album, controversies, and disbandment

The group's seventh and final album Ride West, released in April 2004, featured songs in English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, as well as appearances by well-known American hip hop artists, such as Tupac Shakur and Jennifer Lopez, although Tupac's "appearance" was a freestyle rap that he recorded while in prison. Baby VOX attempted a promotion in the United State of America in 2004. , However the rights for the sample of Tupac's verse were not cleared, and this resulted in a court case pursued by the late rapper's mother, Afeni Shakur. This album was proclaimed to be what catapulted Baby V.O.X. into the international spotlight, hence their use of English in the single. Meanwhile, the music video for the album's feature song, "Xcstasy", was done in English, featuring expensive luxury vehicles and well-dressed, highly preened divas, apparently in emulation of the "Bling bling" style of hip-hop videos popular in the United States during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The group also performed sexy dance moves and wore provocative clothing in the music video, seen as a bit extreme in conservative Korea. However, this release was accompanied by much controversy. There was first the issue as to whether their managing group, DR Music, could legally use Tupac's material in the recording, with Tupac's repesentatives claiming that DR did not have authorization. Even though Baby VOX claimed their rights of using the Tupac's music, many different companies in the USA claimed having the authorization and the dispute was not solved. To worsen the situation, a member of Korean hip hop group DJ DOC, offended by their alleged misuse of Tupac Shakur's lyrics, denounced them in the media and referred to the group as prosititutes. The dispute between DJ DOC and Baby VOX was so huge that both parties went to court for arbitration. Although the DJ Doc member later apologized[citation needed], Baby VOX was still compensated however, this dispute hurt the group's image, as the group suddenly stopped promotion of the single. A second single, "Play Remix" featuring Jennifer Lopez, was promoted for a short while, but sales were lower than from its previous albums. After 2004, Baby VOX went into hiatus and Shim Eun Jin and Yoon Eun Hye departed the group in 2005. In March, 2006, Baby VOX was officially disbanded.

YEH as one of the member of Baby V.O.X

Baby V.O.X. days

Main article: Baby V.O.X

When the girl group Baby V.O.X dropped a member due to a scandal, Yoon Eun-Hye was chosen to replace her. Yoon Eun-Hye was by far the youngest member in the group, debuting at the age of 15. She recorded four albums with the band before leaving the group in July 2005[2] in order to pursue an acting career. While with the group, Eun-Hye quickly became known as the "cute" one not only for her young age, but because of her bright personality. However, she was also criticized for her weight, as she looked overweight compared to her very slim band mates. Although she debuted a new, skinnier body in early 2005, she appeared to be experiencing a "yoyo" effect, as noted by various Korean netizens.[3]
Eun-Hye suffered in the hands of detractors Baby V.O.X. when she joined the group to produce their third album. In a water gun incident, Baby V.O.X. was scheduled to appear on Gyun-Ahn Broadcasts Music Engine and was waiting inside their van when Eun-Hye was shot by a water gun by an unidentified man. The man pretended to be a passionate fan of the group and attempted to offer a Pikachu doll as a present. Suddenly, he took out a water gun and shot Yoon Eun-Hye right in the eye before fleeing. After being shot, Eun-Hye expressed severe pain and could not open her eyes for a long period of time. Baby V.O.X. had to cancel their performance and Eun-Hye was taken straight to the hospital. There, Eun-Hye was informed that her cornea was damaged. The members of the group claimed they smelled soy sauce and vinegar from the water that came out of the water pistol. No further information regarding this incident was released.[4]

Music career

Besides singing in the band, Baby V.O.X, Yoon Eun-Hye lent her voice to Mighty Mouth, for their song 'Sarang Hae,' better known as 'I Love You.' She however, DOES NOT appear in the music video.

Acting career

Yoon Eun-Hye has played a small role on the sitcom "Nonstop Four", where she had a small role with MC Mong, before moving on to became a regular guest for the variety show X-Man on SBS. While on "X-Man", she became involved in a romantic scandal with popular K-pop singer Kim Jong Kook which received coverage from a local newspaper. Although "X-Man" raised her public profile, she left the show a year later in order to pursue acting. Eun Hye also played Kim Jong Kook's love interest in his music video "Saying You Love Me" which was released in July 2006.
Eun Hye had her first major acting role in popular Korean drama, Princess Hours (also known as Goong). Initially, however, fans of Goong had questioned her acting ability leading to controversy.[5][6] The success of the drama also appeared unclear as it competed with My Girl which also boasted casting of popular celebrities such as Lee Jun Ki and Lee Dong Wook.[7] The drama began with average ratings, but as it continued, viewership increased to 28.3% nationally, leading to an extension of the first season (from 20 to 24 episodes) and a Princess Hours special on MBC. Although Yoon and the other main actors initially agreed to work on a second season of Princess Hours, only one of them officially agreed to do so. Another director of a different company eventually filmed a spin-off series with brand new characters, known as Goong S which was not to be confused with the actual Goong sequel planned by the original director and company.
Due to the success of her first drama, Eun Hye has been able to continue acting in other dramas such as The Vineyard Man. Like most Korean dramas at that time[citation needed], The Vineyard Man initially suffered from low ratings due to strong competition from the MBC 45th anniversary drama Jumong; however, the drama ratings gradually increased and reached a successful 15.6% on its finale.
Eun Hye returned in the lead actress role for MBC's Monday/Tuesday drama "The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince" that started airing in July 2007. In this drama, Yoon plays an employee 'Go Eun-chan' at a coffee shop, who was once a master of Taekwondo. With her short haircut and tomboyish ways, she is presumed to be a boy by the owner of the shop, thus leading to romantic complications.[8] The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince garnered higher ratings than her first series Princess Hours. Coffee Prince reached the viewership ratings as high as 32.1% in Seoul, making it number one for it's timeslot in MBC and 29.9% nationwide
It has been reported that Eun Hye has been paid 20 million won per episode for starring in Coffee Prince, enabling her to join Korea's A-list of stars who also are members of the 20 million won club. This "club" consists of Bae Yong-joon, Kwon Sang Woo, Ko Hyun Jung, Song Il kook and Yoon Eun Hye, to name a few.

Controversy with management

The chance for Yoon Eun Hye to act in Goong 2, if it is ever produced, seems unlikely because she has feuded with her management company, Eight Peaks which is producing Goong.
Eun Hye, who has gained enormous popularity through her role in "Coffee Prince", had filed the second certification of contents (COC) to cancel her contractual agreement with her management company, Eight Peaks. When asked to reveal the information behind the second COC, Eun Hye's counsel stated, "if Eight Peaks refused to cancel the contract then they would not hesitate to file a lawsuit, suing them for their refusal."
The contents of the first COC stated that in January 2007 Eun Hye was confirmed to be starring in the MBC drama "Que Sera Sera" and had even participated and completed the script reading and rehearsal for the upcoming shoot. However, Eight Peaks had cancelled Eun Hye's involvement in QSS in order for Yoon to star in Eight Peaks' self produced drama.
Consequently, after the cancellation of Eun Hye's QSS involvement, Eun Hye took a two day vacation to Kangwon-do in March. Eight Peaks claimed that they had no knowledge of this so-called incident and spread a rumor of Eun Hye's irresponsibility online which damaged her reputation.
Yoon's manager, Park Geun-Soo has stated "the second COC includes evidence to support the disagreeable actions made by Eight Peaks." Those actions included the improper handling and distribution/division of earnings and proceeds as well as the unilateral (one-sided) manner of making and carrying out decisions which caused immense problems.
It had been reported that, while Eun Hye was enjoying enormous fame and popularity through her role in the "Coffee Prince", she was suffering mental and emotional problems from the conflicts with Eight Peaks.
Yoon has been diagnosed with Pernicious anemia.[10][11]

New management

After having settled the disputes with Eight Peaks through careful negotiation, Eun Hye then signed with her new management agency, Kraze Entertainment. As a result, Eun Hye was able to focus on her acting career, which will be Kraze Entertainment's focal point of attention.
Her successful performance in 'Coffee Prince', has put her in the list of being one of the best actresses in Korean entertainment.[12]
