korean-filipino remake Kim-samsoon

Overview

Origin

Main article: My Name is Kim Sam Soon

Originally, it aired as My Lovely Sam Soon in South Korea. The series was a major hit in South Korea since its premiere and 50.5% of Korean households tuned in to the finale, with a viewership rate of over 40%.[4]

Some critics believe its huge success was due to the show focused in the life of single chubby middle-aged woman. The physical appearance and stereotype that the female character highlighted (in the sense of mid aged and overweight) portrayed in the drama increased dramatically the popularity particularly in mid aged South Korean women.

In the Philippines

GMA Network aired My Name is Kim Sam Soon in the Philippines dubbed in Tagalog from February 13, 2006 and lasted 13 weeks. It was broadcast back-to-back with Jewel in the Palace on GMA Telebabad.

The series was well received by audience. To date, My Name is Kim Sam Soon is one of the four koreanovelas in the Philippines to reach the 40% boundary along with Jewel in the Palace, Stairway to Heaven and Full House (with the highest rating koreanovela with 50%).

Sypnosis

The story begins with Samsoon dealing with two devastating news— her fiancé stood her up at their wedding, and their family’s bakery was gutted by a fire. Samsoon (Velasquez) then decides to apply as a pastry chef in a five-star restaurant where she crosses paths with the rich and arrogant Cyrus (Fernandez) in a very unusual spot—the male comfort room where he gives her a piece of advice about love and men. Not long after, Cyrus will discover Samsoon’s outstanding talent in baking and hires her to work in his restaurant.

Cyrus has his share of problems too. His domineering mother insists that he marries soon. To be free of his mother’s consistent prodding, Cyrus offers Samsoon a love contract—in which she must act as his girlfriend in exchange for a huge amount of money. He offers Samsoon the contract because he knows he will never fall for a girl like her. Although hesitant and furious about Cyrus’s overconfidence, Samsoon takes the opportunity to pay her family’s debts.

Are they both brave enough to face the consequences of the love contract? Will their plan still work even if their former paramours — Hannah (Samonte) and Harvey (Ramos) — re-enters the picture? Can a gorgeous guy like Cyrus fall for a plump, boisterous girl like Samsoon?

Soundtrack

Just like the dubbed version that aired on GMA Network of the original series, the remake uses the song "Maybe It's You" composed by renowned composer Agatha Obar. The song was originally sung by Jolina Magdangal for the dubbed version; for the remake, Regine Velasquez covered the song.

The remake also uses Velasquez's song "Ikaw" for the piano scenes, the original used "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

Reception

The remake was given rave reviews when the first two episodes were shown to the press in a special screening, praising the deliberately "over-acting" of the cast, especially Regine Velasquez, in pattern of the acting in the original series.[7] Viewers found the series very entertaining, capturing the atmosphere of the original series. It gained a respectable 33.8% on its pilot episode; good enough to take the third spot in the overall race, against another Korean drama remake My Girl with 22.6%.[8]

Director Dominic Zapata pointed out that if Velasquez turned down the title role, the network would hire Rufa Mae Quinto for the role.

Tapos tumalon ako, hindi ako confident na maaabot ko pero naabot ko din so from that day nagda- dunk na kami.

What are you most proud of?
Magaling ako sa basketball. I'm proud to be the son of Rudy Fernandez and Alma Moreno, proud ako na artista ako, proud ako na kasama ako sa GMA

What do you value most?
My knees, my teeth, my blood and of course my career and my family

What do you want to achieve?
To win an award. To achieve more stability- financially. A nicer house. I want to be forever in show business at gusto ko talaga mapasok ang comedy, gusto ko maging Jim Carey

What is your advice to aspiring artists?
Mahalin mo ang trabaho mo para mahalin ka din ng trabaho mo.

An Unusual Tandem
Article posted August 20, 2008

Eyebrows rose when it was revealed that Regine Velasquez and Mark Anthony Fernandez were going to team up for GMA’s first ever Koreanovela remake, 'Ako si Kim Samsoon.' Many doubted if these two would click but after two months on air, Regine and Mark proved that their unusual tandem works. Text by Loretta G. Ramirez. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio

No doubt a hit on primetime television, Ako si Kim Samsoon is a romantic comedy that Filipinos have learned to love. With Asia’s Songbird at its helm and the charming Mark Anthony Fernandez playing Kim’s love interest, you only need to see one episode to see why this show is effective when it comes to entertaining the viewers.

For the first time

Working together for the very first time was indeed a minor obstacle that Mark and Regine had to hurdle. In fact, both went out of their way to get to know each other and build their rapport.

“As actors kasi, like si Mark, he goes out of his way to know me," says Regine. "Siyempre, I also did the same. Ganun naman yun pag di pa masyadong magkakilala. So nagkakahiyaan pa ng konti pero we go out of our way to get to know each other.” She added that their relationship grew as Kim and Cyrus’s story together unraveled.

“Nung umpisa talagang wala pa kaming rapport which is okay, kasi ‘yung characters namin, dapat lagi kaming nagbabangayan. Pero ngayon, I can see that he is already comfortable with me and ako rin, vice versa. Napansin din ni [Direk] Dom na nagkakaroon na kami ng rapport. Meron nga kaming eksena na nagbubugbugan kaming dalawa and we looked cute together,” shares the Songbird when we visited the set of Kim Samsoon.

Mark, on the other hand, was very vocal in saying that he is in awe of Regine. Aside from being one of the favorite actresses and singers of his late father, Mark is also a fan of the legendary Songbird.

“She's the best! I couldn’t ask for more,” says Mark, which sums up what he feels about working with Regine.

The kilig factor

Once the cameras are rolling, Regine and Mark become their characters who are madly in love with each other. But off-cam, the chemistry of these two cannot be denied.

In one of their TV guestings, Regine said that she liked Mark’s eyes. “Very expressive 'yung eyes ni Mark at saka kailangan niyo talaga syang makita dito sa Kim Samsoon dahil ang gwapo gwapo nya dito. Sobrang gwapo!” says the singer-actress, which made Mark blush and smile.

Not to be outdone, Mark also had only praises for Regine: “I don’t think walang ibang makaka-play ng role na ‘yun sa Pilipinas kundi her.” He also said yes when he was asked if he can fall for a girl like Kim. “Pwedeng, pwedeng, pwede,” while smiling and looking at Regine.

These two started out as mere acquaintances but now that Ako si Kim Samsoon is at its peak, there is no doubt in our minds that they have become friends and their admiration for each other grew even further.

Watch the show to prove that this unusual tandem really works. Tune in weeknights right after Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel and fall in love with Cyrus and Kim.

Making a Mark
Article posted September 1, 2008

Earlier this year, after finishing a successful stint in Carlo J. Caparas' Kamandag, Mark Anthony Fernandez decided that it was time for him to try on new roles and different genres. This time around, he wanted to try comedy and see if he could make a mark by making people laugh. Text by Loretta G. Ramirez, Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio

A lot of veteran artists will agree that comedy is the hardest thing to do. It is the most honest among the other genres because you either make people laugh, or you don't. Thus when Mark Anthony Fernandez chose to do comedy, he was not trying to slack off his craft. On the contrary, he wanted to go to the next level and test his abilities.

Choosing comedy

"Actually, after ng Kamandag, tinatanong ako kung ano ang gusto kong gawin. Sabi ko comedy," shares Mark with iGMA.

starsHe said that he wanted a new challenge after doing two serious roles in Impostora and Kamandag. "Sinasabi nila na, 'Ganito ka Mark, ganyan ka.' So sabi ko, kung ganoon, gusto kong mag-comedy kasi comedy raw ang pinakamahirap gawin. So sabi ko, para maipakita ko ang worth ko, gusto kong mag-comedy."

When he was offered to do the role of Cyrus in GMA's first Koreanovela remake, Ako si Kim Samsoon he readily grabbed the project and tried to work on making people laugh.

Mark makes his mark

At the start of the series, it was obvious to the viewers that Mark and Ms. Regine Velasquez had good chemistry on-screen. The Songbird, being a veteran in romantic comedies nailed the role of Kim Samsoon. What surprised the televiewers is that Mark succeeded when it came to delivering the punch lines and making people laugh.

"I think it was a little bit tough, medyo mabigat ng konti. It's an experience worth remembering. Though wala ako masyadong maraming comedy scenes dito, enjoy sya, pero at the same time talagang mahirap gawin dahil kailangan mapatawa naming yung manonood e," confessed Mark.

starsBut that did not put him off from doing comedies. In fact he wants to try another comedic project.

"I want to be sana a part of a comedy again, mga tipong sitcom, parang ganito na mas comedy pa. Ang gusto ko kasi may ending e," he confirmed.

Mark also said that after the show's good performance in the ratings game and getting a lot of positive reviews from the viewers and critics, he and Regine have talked about doing another project together.

In the meantime fans of Kim Samsoon have still a lot of entertaining episodes to look forward to.

"Maraming salamat sa pagpanood nyo sa amin lagi. Asahan nyo po na pipilitin naming gumawa ng kasing ganda o mas magandang proyekto. Pinagusapan namin ni Ms. Regine na sana magkasama kami ulit. Given the chance sa TV ulit."

Enjoy the light and touching humor of Ako si Kim Samsoon weeknights during GMA's primetime Telebabad block.

korean-filipino remake 20265129662004m

Kim Samsoon is already giving us what she has promised-comedy with lots of heart! As Pinoys embrace the chubby chef and her witty crew, Regine Velasquez also slowly rises to a whole new level of acting. From glamorous Songbird to frumpy Samsoon, how does she do it? Text by KC M. Abalos. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.

The ratings are proof that GMA's version of the beloved Korean character Kim Samsoon
has truly been accepted by the critical Pinoy viewers. With lovable characters, a great story, and a talented cast, it is no wonder that the show is already a success from its first week! But apart from the "kilig" scenes and the yummy food, it is Kim Samsoon's quirks that incite laughter and the occasional tears.

starsRegine Velasquez has faced the question of whether she is the right person for the role head on. With an open mind and an open heart, she has set out to conquer the biggest challenge ever put to her as an actress. So far, the response has been great. How does she feel?

"Very overwhelming. We've always thought that we have good material when we started shooting. Kasi script pa lang, nakakatawa na eh. Lahat kami actually, excited na makuha 'yung script kasi parang comics. 'Yung you want to find out what's gonna happen next kasi what's gonna happen to the characters," Regine answers with enthusiasm.

The Songbird knows that GMA has put a lot of their faith in her for this project. Not only does the show boast of the best stars, it also boasts of the production crew that brought us the phenomenal Marimar.

stars"Sinusuportahan ng bonganga bongga ng GMA. I've a really great ensemble cast. Great actors and all of them are really supportive." She thankfully says and continues, "I am enjoying myself and the people that I'm working with-sobrang comfortable with the staff, the crew. The same people who gave us Marimar, now they're here working with me. It's very overwhelming. It's an honor for me to work with them."

Becoming Samsoon

We are pretty sure it is an honor for the cast and crew to work with the diva too! Witnesses attest that Regine gives her input for the show and is willing to give Kim her all!

She explains, "Kim is searching for love but she's different in so many levels, she's really different from the characters I've played before. It's very exciting!

Regine shares that just like a lot of women, she relates to Kim because her one goal is similar to our diva's original aspiration - to help her family. Regine relates not just to the character's passion for cooking but for the pressure that seems to come from everyone around her.

stars"I actually like the character very much. She's very happy, I can even relate to her. She has this eternal problem with her weight but in actuality, it wasn't her who has the problem with it, it's the people around her. Kasi 'pag siya tinatanong mo, she's happy the way she is but people always tell her--you have to lose weight so that someone will love you."

For the role, Regine has to put on a fat suit. Underneath that padding, it is not only warm, it also feels claustrophobic. The Songbird feels uncomfortable but, for her, it is a small sacrifice to pay for the privilege of playing this character. (In fact, Regine is bonding with Kim so intimately that she finds it difficult to stop eating when she is in character!)

She reveals, "may konting uncomfortable factor but if you think of the whole picture, it's so small a sacrifice for me to do. Besides, I rely on the fat suit so much kasi when I put it on, it's Kim. Doon ko na-didifferentiate si Regine from Kim. That's how I also get my inspiration, that is how I get her angst."

korean-filipino remake Kim_sam_soon_pic02

korean-filipino remake 6d9f

In the show, Kim Samsoon has already admitted the hard truth that she is falling for her uppity but gorgeous boss Cyrus. Just as it is difficult for Kim to adjust to Cyrus’ ways, Regine Velasquez also has to get used to working with her handsome leading men. Text by KC M. Abalos. Photos by Mitch S. Maurcio.

starsWe caught up with Regine Velasquez and the rest of the cast on the set of Kim Samsoon. Tagaytay provides a breathtaking backdrop to Kim’s equally interesting life. Even though they have been taping for more than a month, the Songbird still looks forward to donning her character.

“It’s very exciting. I am enjoying myself and the people that I’m working with—sobrang comfortable with the staff, the crew and the other cast,” she says with a beaming smile even though they have been taping non-stop for more than a day.

We glimpsed Wendell Ramos, all buffed and attractive as the cameras were about to roll, we thus asked Regine what is it like working with Wendell.

She answers, “si Wendell, matagal ko ng kilala. I’ve known him for a long time, kasi part siya ng barkada ni Ogie, ‘di na ko naiilang sa kanya.”

starsBut isn’t it more awkward to play Wendell’s girlfriend because he is her boyfriend’s real life pal?

She ponders on her reply, “this is my first time to work with him. ‘Di lang ako sure kung naiilang siya sa akin, but I don’t think so kasi matagal na kami magkalilala.”

Harvey may be Kim’s former fiancé but it is her fiery relationship with her boss, Cyrus Ruiz that is making us “kilig”!

Crazy over Cyrus

In the show, Kim has finally admitted to herself that she is head over heels in love with her unpredictable boss. Just like the story, Regine and Mark Anthony Fernandez, who plays Cyrus, had to adjust to each other’s rhythms.

“Nung umpisa talagang wala pa which is ok, kasi ‘yung characters namin dapat lagi nagbabangayan eh,” she comments and adds. “Pero ngayon I can see that he is already comfortable with me and ako rin.”

But during their first few tapings, the Songbird admits that she and her onscreen partner were still tentatively eyeing each other, trying to see if they would click. It helped when Regine invited the cast over to her own home so that they can all get to know each other.

stars“Before kami nag-shooting we had a little party in my house to have a little bit of bonding. I got to know them a liitle bit. Not everyone could come [but], just the same, at least ‘yung ibang cast nakausap ko. It’s good kasi dere-derecho na kami.”

Another element that helped Regine and Mark establish a connection is Mark's attempt to really get to know the Songbird. He himself admits that he was starstuck by his partner too!

Regine reveals, “as actors kasi, like with Mark, he goes out of his way to know me. Siyempre I also do the same. Ganoon naman ‘yun eh. 'Di pa masyado magkakilala so nagkakahiyaan pa ng konti.”

She then shared an incident when they all realized that their unusual combination is actually working. She fondly recalls, “Meron kami eksena na nagbubugbugan kaming dalawa and napansin ni [Director Dominic Zapata] Dom na nagkakaroon na kami ng rapport. We look cute together!”

People may have had doubts on the Regine-Mark tandem but even though it is an unusual mix, the ratings state that there is no other love team that can be as exciting or as sweet.

The newest sweetheart of Philippine television is set to make her online debut via the iGMA Live Chat!

Ms. Regine Velasquez whips up a surprise for her fans worldwide as she answers all your questions about her new show Ako si Kim Samsoon, her singing career, and just about anything you want to know about Asia’s Songbird!
